DESCRIPTION:UPDATE: We wanted to give some information about the event! You will remember we ratified the Regents’ offer already. They also did not bargain in good faith. So we will continue pursuing legal action to try to secure our benefits that way. \nMeanwhile\, because the Regents refused to ratify their own offer and protect our benefits\, the Public Employee Relations Board (PERB) has ordered us to restart negotiations. So we will have:\n-an initial proposal by the union and by the Regents’ lawyers and UI administrators: both are open to the public\, and this will let us see whether the Regents will try to change our benefits from the get-go\n-a bargaining session where we meet jointly with the Regents bargaining team\n-mediation where a PERB representative will go between the union and the Regents’ representatives \nSo there will be\, especially at the beginning\, plenty of opportunity to participate! You are especially encouraged to ask questions during the initial proposals. Bargaining sessions can be an eye-opening experience\, too. You should feel to bring work to do!\n————\nCome to our bargaining session on February 21st! A number of our contract benefits have become permissive topics of bargaining. That means if the Regents don’t want to talk about those topics\, we cannot legally force them to. \nHours of work\, for example\, is a permissive topic. So if we do not get them to agree to keep our hours of work in the contract as is\, then the Regents could take out hours of work from the contract. Then they would be legally capable of DOUBLING your hours while paying you the same wage. \nWe want a BIG turnout for this event so we can pressure them to NOT CUT our benefits under such permissive topics! JOIN US and help us fight for the well-being of all graduate workers! \nThis will likely last hours. Past sessions have gone until midnight. We encourage you to attend whenever you can and for as long as you can! You can bring work to do\, too. But we want to show the Regents folks are FED UP with their stalling. We want answers about our benefits\, and we want them now!

DESCRIPTION:As a group\, we will visit Harreld’s office and ask him to publicly state that the University of Iowa does not support cuts to graduate workers’ wages or benefits. JOIN US! We want as many graduate workers to be present as possible to show the university that we want them to stand by us and to defend us. \nWe will gather at 2:15 pm on the Pentacrest and head to Harreld’s office at 2:30 pm. We want our officials to end the uncertainty many of us have about our own welfare and the welfare of those that depend on our work. \nWe belong to\, and are valued members of\, the UI family and community: to refuse to defend graduate workers’ benefits and wages is to treat us like we are disposable.

This bill is horrible: it goes even further than Wisconsin’s Act 10 in busting unions and attacking our workers’ rights. \nA summary of key points can be found here (link). Any further updates will appear on our website event page (link) and our Facebook event page (link). \nTHIS IS OUR CHANCE to save our healthcare and tuition coverage before the law is changed next week! Spread the word about this meeting! \nWe will also explain the bargaining committee’s rationale and give the COGS coordinating committee’s recommendation. We will also update you on the threat to our union from Des Moines (see also the flyer below). You must be a COGS member in good standing to participate in the meeting and to vote.\n————\n     Special Meeting to Discuss Ratification of a Contract\nDate: Saturday\, February 11\, 2017\nTimes: 2:00 pm\nLocation: Old Brick Main Hall\n20 East Market Street\nIowa City\, IA 52245\n     (you will also be able to vote from 9:00 am – 5:00 pm\non 02-12 and 02-13 in Old Brick) \nUnder Article 29\, Section D of the COGS Constitution\, the COGS Negotiating Committee has called a Special Meeting to Discuss Ratification of a Contract. \nThe Negotiating Committee recommends that the Membership accept the Board of Regents’ last offer of 2% total package\, which includes maintaining the tuition and fees scholarships\, UIGradCare health insurance\, a salary increase of approximately 1.4% in each year of the Agreement\, and status quo on all other items in the contract. We believe that this offer was made in good faith on December 5\, and that their chief negotiator had complete authority to make such an offer. We demand that the Board of Regents honor it. \nRatification of this Agreement prior to the passage of Iowa legislation gutting public sector collective bargaining\, which will happen next week in Des Moines\, is our attempt to preserve the COGS contract for another two years. The bill will make wages the only mandatory topic of bargaining and will cap salary increases at the rate of inflation or 3%\, whichever is less. \nVoting will take place by secret ballot at the meeting\, and from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm at the COGS office on Sunday and Monday. \nArticle 29\, Section D. Special Meeting to Discuss Ratification of a Contract: In a special meeting for that purpose\, the Negotiating Committee shall explain and make recommendations regarding a new contract\, and the General Membership will decide by secret ballot whether or not to ratify the contract.  Balloting shall continue in the Union office for two (2) days following the special meeting.  At least fifty per cent (50%) of those voting must affirm the contract in order for it to be ratified.
